Squint Surgeries

A very common Eye Disorder in India, in which the eyes don't look in exactly the same direction at the same time. Also known as Strabismus - a condition in which the eyes do not align properly. One eye may turn inwards, upwards, downwards, or outwards, while the other one focuses at one spot. The squinting may turn in (converge), turn out (diverge) or sometimes turn up or down.

Strabismus also makes binocular vision impossible, so it is harder for the person to appreciate depth perception. Such a condition is not merely related to alignment disorders & depth perception, rather can be associated with decreased vision - Diplopia (double vision) and peripheral visual field.

How it happens

Squint can arise due to an incorrect balance of muscles, refractive error, childhood illnesses, nerve palsy and several other reasons. If the squint is suspected at birth or soon after, then it is necessary to evaluate the baby at the earliest.

Medically speaking, a person can develop cataract when protein builds up in the lens of your eye and makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing through clearly and can cause you to lose partial eyesight. It is not precisely known as to why people get cataract however some of the known causes of cataract are:

  • By Birth (Congenital) - Babies are born with a squint though it may not be obvious for initial few weeks but develops in the first 6 months after birth.
  • Long Sightedness or (Hypermetropia) - If the child cannot focus well, he tends to put extra effort to focus, which can cause a double vision.. If left untreated not only does the eye deviate but also becomes a lazy Eye (Amblyopia).
  • Childhood illnesses - Squint may also develop because of viral fever, measles, meningitis, Astigmatism, Myopia etc.
  • Injury to the nerves could develop the condition of Squint either instantly or overtime.
  • Hereditary - A family history of frequent Squint could be a probability of your child carrying the same eye disorder.

Health Tip : It is advisable that you get your child's vision parameters and any potential need for spectacles assessed from an ophthalmologist.

Many people think that squint is a permanent condition and cannot be corrected. But the fact is that eyes can be straightened at any age. Our Doctors treat such patents on a very regular basis with very successful results.

Diagnostic Test Procedure in case of a suspected Squint case:

Your ophthalmologist will use eye drops that dilate the pupils before the test is done.

The Hirschberg test is used to assess whether the patient has Strabismus. The ophthalmologist shines a light in the eye and observes where the light reflects from the corneas. If the eyes are well-aligned, the light will go to the center of both corneas. If it does not, the test can show whether the patient has Exotropia, Hypertropia or Esotropia.

A patient with suspected Squint is thoroughly assessed to know the type of squint as it is very important to note the vision and fixation pattern in both eyes. The spectacle power and degree of squint will be examined till he grows up. Any residual squint that may not be corrected by spectacle can be corrected by surgery.

At Dr. Manpreet's Global Eye Hospital, professionally trained specialists perform such needed surgical procedures with great precision and expertise. Our surgeons are trusted for seamless procedures with reliable results. In Squint Surgical procedures also, if done at appropriate time results can be very good and 3D vision can be developed or restored.

Remember this is a day Care Surgery with no hospitalization. The eye pad is removed the next day and eye drops are instilled a couple of times during the following weeks. Since it is an external surgery there is no effect on the vision. Though the eyes may be red initially but a person can resume his routines in a couple of days.

Be sure You have it !

An important diagnostic feature that can well exclude a falsely concluded SQUINT is that sometimes a "Pseudo Squint" may be present due to a wide gap between the eyes, flat nose bridge where the eyes do appear misaligned but actually may well not be the condition of Strabismus.

Hence an authentic medical opinion is absolutely vital in Establishing Squint.
